Tottenham Hotspur were reported as having opened talks to sign Napoli defender Nikola Maksimovic earlier this week, while West Ham, Everton and Fulham were also keen – but now he could join Mesut Ozil at Fenerbahce.
Maksimovic, 29, is out of contract at Napoli in the summer and has seemingly rejected the chance to extend his stay with Gennaro Gattuso’s side. He remains a part of the Italian’s plans, having played 14 times in all competitions this season.
Italian newspaper Il Mattino claimed earlier this week that Tottenham had opened talks to sign the experienced Serbia international, but faced competition from the Hammers, Carlo Ancelotti and Scott Parker’s struggling Fulham.
Napoli are willing to let him go for just £9million this month, but now it appears he might become a teammate of Ozil at Fener. Fanatik report that sporting director Emre Belozoglu has opened talks with the player’s representatives over a move.
TBR’s view – Tottenham need a defender after Liverpool showing
But is Maksimovic the answer? Experienced and strong in the air, Maksimovic is certainly a wiley defender. But Serie A suits him in that it is a league with a slow tempo – in the Premier League, his lack of pace would be made very apparent.
In a team with a low block, such as West Ham or even Fulham to a degree, he would be decent. But for the likes of Everton and Tottenham who prefer a high press, he would be exposed. The Turkish league would also suit him well.
Spurs need a defender, but Maksimovic is not the answer.
