Cristian Gamboa has confirmed on Instagram that he is to leave Celtic at the end of his contract, thanking fans and the club for the three years he spent in Glasgow – prompting Patrick Roberts and Jonny Hayes to react.
Gamboa, 29, has managed just 31 appearances for Celtic since joining the club in the summer of 2016 from West Brom. This season, he has played only seven times in all competitions.
Neil Lennon has opted against renewing his current contract which expires at the end of the month, and Gamboa has now stated that he will be leaving the club. Reports have given a clue where he could end up.
The Scottish Sun claim Gamboa has rejected a return to his home country Costa Rica with Deportiva Alajuelense to move to Danish champions FC Copenhagen.
He posted a heartfelt message on Instagram, to which former Celtic star Roberts and current winger Hayes replied. Mikael Lustig, who is also expected to leave, wished Gamboa and his family well.
Gamboa has not done nearly enough to even come close to a new contract. Celtic will be looking for a new right-back in the summer, with Lustig also leaving, and that leaves Gamboa with no choice but to leave.
It remains to be seen if he is indeed going to sign for Copenhagen, but Gamboa will leave after winning potentially nine trophies but only managing 31 appearances.
