Incoming Arsenal signing David Raya is confident that he can displace Aaron Ramsdale and start in Mikel Arteta’s ever-improving side.

That’s according to journalist Duncan Castles who shared the update on X.

Whilst confirming a transfer fee of £30m, Castles also shared Raya’s confidence that he’s not just coming to be back up.

Castles said: “Understand that Arsenal have agreed to pay a guaranteed transfer fee of £30m to Brentford for David Raya.

“Spain goalkeeper confident of displacing Aaron Ramsdale as Arsenal’s number one.”

Signing Raya is no doubt a bold statement of ambition by Arsenal and Mikel Arteta.

But it’s also a risk.

25-year-old Ramsdale is thriving in an Arsenal shirt right now and is already fulfilling some of his vast potential.

Matt Turner hasn’t realistically been a challenge for the England goalkeeper’s spot.

And whilst this environment seems to be working for Ramsdale, Arteta clearly wants change.

As Raya has declared himself, via this report, he won’t settle for being a back-up, he comes in to start at Arsenal and disrupt the XI.

Whether fans think this is a good move seems pretty divided.

David Raya is confident he’ll earn a start at Arsenal

Raya’s confidence is understandable, especially when you consider how long Arsenal have chased their man.

Arsenal and Arteta’s interest now dates back over three years.

And it looks like the club have finally secured their man.

In doing so Arsenal really do now have an excellent goalkeeping department, one befitting of any top side in the world.

Arteta’s whole summer mantra seems to have been creating elite competition in all areas of the squad, and he will no doubt be buoyed by Raya’s stance.

The manager will want Raya to demand a start at Arsenal, he’ll want that of all of his squad players.

In the project Arteta is trying to build there will certainly be no place for passengers.

And whilst it’s hard to give that label to the seemingly outbound Matt Turner, he clearly wasn’t doing enough to push Ramsdale.
