Andreas Christensen reportedly will not be joining Newcastle United despite rumours this week that FC Barcelona will sell the defender.

The 27-year-old centre-back has in recent days been linked with a move to St. James’ Park, with Newcastle eager to add a quality defensive option to their ranks this January.

With Barcelona’s financial situation as bad as it is, the La Liga giants would be open to selling Christensen to bring in some much-needed funds for additional signings.

However, according to Tipsbladet, these rumours are completely false, with Christensen happy at Barcelona and a move to Newcastle unlikely to happen this January.

Indeed, given Christensen’s previous experience in the Premier League with Chelsea, the Danish international would have been quite the signing for Newcastle.

However, after this latest update from Denmark, it seems pretty clear now that the Barcelona defender won’t be leaving Catalonia for Newcastle anytime soon.

Christensen has been a regular for Barcelona since joining the club 18 months ago, and whilst the La Liga side selling the defender checks out as a story, a move to Newcastle would have been a surprise.

As we know, Barcelona are looking for cold, hard cash when it comes to selling players, and Newcastle’s FFP position leaves the Magpies in a bad position to make any permanent signings this January.

Moreover, whilst a defender is needed, Eddie Howe is fully aware that a central midfielder is really what Newcastle need this month, with Christensen a player the Magpies can wait to sign.
