26-year-old star was 'fantastic' in 3-2 win over Newcastle this season, now Howe reportedly wants to sign him

Newcastle have been credited with an interest in signing Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Tottenham when the summer transfer window opens.

The Daily Mirror claim that the mega-rich Magpies are plotting a £30 million swoop for the Danish international.

Eddie Howe has already improved his midfield drastically, reinventing Joelinton and integrating marquee January signing Bruno Guimaraes.

Before Howe took over, Hojbjerg produced a performance against Newcastle back in October which drew praise from then Spurs boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Nuno said: “I think it’s not only the front four, all the team played good, but of course we’re talking about Sonny, Harry, Lucas and Tanguy.

“I think they combined well, they worked very hard without the ball and the way they recovered, with the mobility they created.

“It was good but everything they did was because they had the foundation behind them. Skippy and Pierre, they did fantastic work.”

Also, Hojbjerg provided the assist for Harry Kane’s goal in the 22nd minute, which put Tottenham ahead 20 minutes after they slipped behind to Callum Wilson’s opener.

As per WhoScored, that day Hojbjerg had a whopping 124 touches, more than any other player on the pitch.

Nobody on either side could better his 96.1 per cent pass accuracy and he also made a staggering nine tackles to help his team earn the win.

Hojbjerg can combine bite in the tackle with decent passing ability, but it is just whether Newcastle want to go big in midfield again after landing Bruno.

An anchorman upgrade on Jonjo Shelvey will be needed at some point, but Howe might want to make changes in goal, at centre-half and sign a new playmaker and striker before making Hojbjerg a priority.

Newcastle of course have the cash to solve multiple problems in one window, and Hojbjerg is a player with Premier League experience who can still improve and therefore it does make sense that Newcastle would want him.
