£25m Newcastle boost: French club bring in replacement as Toon step up advances
Newcastle might be about to receive a boost in their reported pursuit of Lens star Seko Fofana. That is, because Lens are set to beat Celtic, and sign Patrick Berg for £4million – according to French newspaper L’Equipe.
Fofana, 26, has sparkled in French football this season. The Ivory Coast international has scored five goals in 18 Ligue 1 games this season, captaining Lens 13 times. He scored against PSG during a 1-1 draw recently.
Jeunes Footeux report that Lens want as much as £25million for Fofana – and there are plenty of suitors. Foot Mercato claim that Newcastle are interested in landing him, to bolster their midfield options.
Now, L’Equipe hand Newcastle a further boost in their pursuit of Fofana. That is, because they report that Lens are about to sign Norway international Berg – with the midfielder identified as a replacement for Fofana.
The French outlet state that Newcastle are intensifying their interest in Fofana and that has convinced Lens to take action. Whether Newcastle do end up going in for Fofana, remains to be seen.
Newcastle get Fofana boost: Is African ace a benefit for Newcastle?
The midfielder is about to potentially jet off and represent the Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations. So, even if Newcastle do buy him, they will not see him until the early stages of February.
He would be a brilliant signing. Fofana bolsters a midfield lacking in quality and goals. But is he the kind of addition Newcastle need to be making in January? Perhaps, a move would be better in the summer.
