23-year-old international shines, the one that got away for Celtic?

Celtic could well be kicking themselves as Timothy Castagne starred for Belgium against Kazakhstan.

The attacking full-back started the Euro 2020 qualifier ahead of Thomas Meunier at right wing-back, and playing a brilliant role in the 3-0 win, scoring the game’s second goal.

Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku and Napoli forward Dries Mertens were also on the scoresheet.

The victory means Roberto Martinez’s side are top of Group I with three wins from three, with Russia and Scotland three points further back in second.

Castagne’s inclusion in the starting XI was slightly surprising given Martinez’s previous faith in Meunier, but the Atalanta defender really impressed in Brussels.

TBR’s view

Celtic were linked with a move for Castagne earlier this year, and the player recently confirmed that a bid was made by the Scottish champions.

The Hoops tabled an offer of £8 million (via The Daily Record), but the Serie A side rejected it in the hope of raising £12 million.

Castagne was struggling for regular game time at the time, but went on to become a key player for Atalanta, helping them to qualify for the Champions League.

Maybe Celtic were ultimately powerless in their pursuit of Castagne, but he certainly looks like the one that got away for the club, who really need a new long-term right-back.
