Spanish defender Hugo Diaz has sent a heartfelt message to Leeds United fans on Twitter as he confirmed his exit from the club, two years after joining – and Leeds fans have responded.
Diaz, 22, joined Leeds in the summer of 2017 from Spanish side Silva SD, and instantly became a crucial part of the club’s reserve side under Marcelo Bielsa’s side-kick Carlos Corberan.
Last season, Diaz captained the impressive second string to success in the Professional Development League North, shining at the back alongside Pascal Struijk, Aapo Halme and Leif Davis.
Despite his commanding performances and Leeds’ lack of cover at centre-back in the first team, club and player have decided to part company. Diaz confirmed as much on his official Twitter account, thanking fans and the club.
The statement reads as below:
Leeds have limited options at centre-back, at the moment. As far as senior players go, Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson remain the club’s only options. Struijk and Halme have been in and around the senior side.
Supporters of the Championship club have reacted to Diaz’s Tweet, with many questioning why the club have opted against keeping the ball-playing centre-back at Elland Road – especially given the lack of options at the heart of Bielsa’s defence.
