21-year-old linked with Liverpool in late 2020 was 'incredible' for his country last night
A centre-back Liverpool were linked with last year delivered a superb display for his nation on Monday night.
According to a report in The Mirror from last October, the Reds were interested in Ajax defender Perr Schuurs.
Italy’s Corriere dello Sport, meanwhile, claimed in November that the Reds tabled a 30million Euro offer (£27million) for him.
In the end, Liverpool bolstered their defensive ranks with other players, and Schuurs penned an extension at Ajax until 2025.
The Reds may regret missing out on the 21-year-old, given how well he’s done this season – and is continuing to do so.
On Monday night, Schuurs’ Netherlands Under-21s overcame France’s U21s in their U21 Euro quarter-final in Hungary.
Highly-fancied France took the lead thanks to Ibrahima Konate’s 23rd-minute header.
However, the Dutch equalised early in the second half before going on to turn the game around late on.
Abdou Harroui’s strike deflected to Myron Boadu, who was onside and finished from close range.
And in injury time, Justin Kluivert crossed for Boadu to guide the ball into the net and put the Oranje in the semi-finals.
Football Oranje gave Schuurs 8/10 and wrote: “In the first-half he shone with a stunning outside of the boot pass for Justin Kluivert.
“And in the second he made an incredible tackle to deny France a second goal.
“He grew into the game and commanded the area well in the second half.”
