Kieran Trippier has been thriving after leaving Tottenham Hotspur but says he’s interested in making a return to English football before his career is over.

However, he has effectively ruled out a return to Spurs, saying he would only return to the Premier League to play at Burnley under Sean Dyche.

Trippier joined Tottenham in 2015 after three years with the Clarets, and made 114 appearances for Spurs, scoring twice and recording 24 assists (Transfermarkt).

The 29-year-old then swapped Tottenham for Atletico Madrid last summer in a £20million move (BBC Sport) and has been impressing for Diego Simeone’s side, with 26 appearances under his belt so far.

However, Trippier still remembers his time at Burnley fondly, while also saying he regularly speaks to Dyche about not just football but family as well.

“We have a great relationship,” Trippier told the Burnley Express. “We’re in contact all the time about family, football – he still mithers me about taking me back one day. It’ll happen one day for sure, I’ll 100 percent be back playing for them.

“I would love to retire there. That’s my aim, to retire at Burnley. I want to play as high as I can for as long as I can but I’ll know when the time is right.

“If I’m at Atleti for another two years, that’ll take me to 32, and Burnley’s the only club that I’d come back to England for. After that I’d start my coaching badges and I’d love to coach at Burnley. I’d just love to go wherever Sean Dyche goes.”

Although Trippier suffered a downturn in form during his last season at Tottenham and copped some flak from sections of the fanbase, his departure stripped Spurs of a dangerous weapon, namely his deliveries into the box.

Meanwhile, he is now doing well at Atletico, and even though he’s effectively ruled out a return to Spurs, it’s nonetheless nice to see him speak so fondly about the club where he made a name for himself, as well as praising the coach who helped him break through.
