Maxwell Statham has confirmed on Twitter that he has joined Watford despite signing professional terms with Tottenham Hotspur just last summer – and Under-23 Spurs man Malachi Fagan-Walcott has responded.
Statham, 20, came through the Tottenham ranks and signed his first professional contract under Mauricio Pochettino just over 12 months ago. His father, Brian Statham – who is a former Spurs defender – confirmed his son had signed a new deal in 2019.
The centre-back was a regular in the club’s Under-18 side during the 2018-19 season, but last term he failed to make a single appearance for the club’s reserve side – despite making the bench twice at the beginning of 2020 against Derby and Brighton.
But it appears that despite his professional terms last summer, Statham has decided to search for pastures new and has agreed a move to recently-relegated Championship side Watford. Indeed, the defender confirmed as much on Twitter.
TransferMarkt claim the move is a free transfer for Watford, rather than just a loan deal.

Statham is not the only centre-back to leave Tottenham’s second string this summer, with Jonathan Dinyezi leaving Spurs to join north London rivals Arsenal. Spanish midfielder Armand Shashoua has also departed, joining Atletico Baleares.
Statham’s former Under-23 Spurs teammate Fagan-Walcott has responded to his confirmation that he has joined Watford from Tottenham – wishing Statham luck.
Good luck brother 🙏🏾 https://t.co/x77BftLcA4
