Tottenham Hotspur academy midfielder Chay Cooper has rejoined former club Southend on a short-term basis, the Basildon, Canvey and Southend Echo has reported.
The 18-year-old was snapped up by Spurs in 2017 after impressing for the Shrimpers at youth level, and stepped up to Tottenham’s Under-18s the following year.
“Elsewhere in midfield 17-year-old Max Robson has been a creative and goalscoring threat from the centre of the park for the U18s as has 18-year-old Chay Cooper,” he wrote.
On Tuesday, Southend’s Under-23s took on their Oxford counterparts and Cooper was involved, playing 65 minutes in the 3-1 away defeat.
The official match report confirmed that the teenage midfielder was on a work experience loan contract from Spurs.
“He’s not on trial and he’s still with Tottenham but he wants to play games,” coach Craig Fagan told the Echo.
“He hasn’t played too many games for their Under-23s so he’s with us now to play same matches, I think until Christmas.
“He’s one we know and trust. He’s another one with good ability but he maybe just needs to work on the other side of the game.”
According to Cooper’s Transfermarkt profile, he has made 20 appearances for Spurs Under-18s, with a decent tally of five goals and three assists under his belt, but he’s yet to feature for their U23s.
While he is a highly rated youngster, a lack of game time is an issue, and linking up with a club he’s familiar with is a good step, particularly if he gets to feature regularly for their Under-23s.
