Tottenham Hotspur played their best football for several months but still ended up losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup.
The general feeling among football fans a couple of months ago was that Spurs wouldn’t stand a chance against Luis Enrique’s PSG side.
However, on Wednesday in Udine, Tottenham were the better team for large parts of the game – even Enrique claimed that Spurs deserved to win.
But Thomas Frank’s side were beaten, and one of his players has come under criticism now.
Guglielmo Vicario rated as Tottenham’s worst player vs PSG
Before the game, Guglielmo Vicario would’ve expected a very busy evening against PSG.
The Parisians were the best team in Europe last season, and they caused problems to every side they faced in the Champions League.
The likes of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola and Desire Doue can be unplayable on their day, but Tottenham contained all of them brilliantly in the Super Cup.
PSG had three shots on target all game, and Vicario saved one of them. Sadly for Spurs fans, the other two went in and took the tie to penalties.
Vicario failed to make a single save in the shootout, and that hasn’t impressed media outlets in France.
Maxifoot gave Vicario a 4/10 rating, the worst of all Spurs players who started the game, and wrote: “Having been largely untroubled for a long time, the Tottenham goalkeeper was not decisive at the end of the match.
“Three Parisian shots on target, two goals: he didn’t do his job tonight.”
GFFN also gave Vicario the lowest rating of any Spurs player – 4/10. Ouest-France’s Made in Foot rated him a 5/10, which is the joint lowest, along with Joao Palhinha and Rodrigo Bentancur.

Criticism of Guglielmo Vicario is very harsh
If you just look at the numbers and see that Vicario conceded two goals and three shots, you can’t be blamed for thinking he didn’t have a good game.
Not saving a single penalty in the shootout makes it look even worse for the Italian, who Tottenham signed for a little over £17 million in 2023 (Sky Sports).
However, Vicario didn’t stand a chance with either of the goals in normal time, and all of PSG’s penalties in the shootout were very well hit.
Handing Vicario the lowest rating of all the Spurs players who started the game is extremely harsh, but that’s what the French media thought about his display.
We’re sure Frank’s assessment will be a lot more positive.
