A player previously linked with Arsenal and Newcastle United has described the prospect of playing in the Premier League as “very attractive” and says he’s learning English.

According to El Desmarque, the Magpies were interested in bringing Real Madrid’s Lucas Vazquez to St James’ Park in January, with West Ham and Wolverhampton Wanderers also linked.

Arsenal, meanwhile, were heavily linked with the winger last summer and, according to the same outlet, were pursuing a potential move in the last transfer window.

Vazquez, who has made over 200 appearances for Real and has three Champions League triumphs on his CV, insists he wants to finish his career at the Bernabeu.

However, the 28-year-old has refused to rule out a move to the Premier League, revealing he is taking English lessons – potentially just in case a team from these shores comes in for him.

“The dream is to retire at Madrid but in football, you don’t know,” Vazquez – who has also been linked with Chelsea – told The Guardian.

“When I was little, I always watched the Premier League with my brother. It was, it is, very attractive: a nice football to play, one that could fit my characteristics and personality well.”

Regarding his English classes, Vazquez said: “I have a basis already and I watch series in English, read a bit, study grammar. I’ve been doing it for a year and a half.”

Vazquez is a player of the highest calibre, as shown by a CV which features hundreds of appearances for Real Madrid and numerous trophies.

This season, however, he has made just 18 appearances in all competitions, with a mere six La Liga starts, and his contract is up in the summer of 2021 – several things which could hint at a potential summer departure from the Bernabeu.

He would be quite a coup for both Arsenal and Newcastle, and while he was previously quoted at €20million (around £17million) by El Desmarque last October, who knows whether having 12 months on his contract – not to mention the current financial uncertainty within the football industry – could see him available for even cheaper?
