£170k-a-week star with ‘speed, power and character’ told to snub Newcastle

With Newcastle United on the verge of a takeover, the Magpies have been linked with several high-profile players and coaches amid the prospect of St James’ Park having a huge budget going forward.

PCP Capital Partners, headed by Amanda Staveley, have brokered the £300million deal, which is being backed by the Saudi Arabian royal family’s Public Investment Fund, and the prospective new owners are expected to have major ambitions upon arriving at St. James’ Park.

ESPN reported last week that Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani, Napoli ace Dries Mertens and Chelsea midfielder Willian are being sought after by the potential new arrivals at Newcastle as they seek to make their mark on the club.

Cavani, who has claimed 200 goals and 43 assists from 301 PSG games, will be a free agent in the summer and is considering his next move, with the Daily Mail claiming the Uruguayan has had offers from the Premier League, the MLS and Serie A.

Former Uruguay international Dario Silva, however, has urged the 33-year-old to snub St James Park and instead opt for Real Madrid if the offer comes, in conversation with Il Posticipo.

“I dream of seeing Cavani at Real Madrid,” he said of the £170,000-a-week ace. “I hope he doesn’t go to Newcastle. I don’t think he interests Florentino (Perez) as a player, but I’d like to see him in the white shirt.

“Cavani is similar to me. He has speed, power and character.”

Newcastle are certainly the talk of world football at present, given their seemingly imminent – and potentially very lucrative – takeover.

However, one thing the Magpies would not be able to offer Cavani is European football, and with the player in the twilight of his career, he’s running out of time to try and win the Champions League.

Besides, Real Madrid and Barcelona tend to hold a special place in the heart of many South American football fans and players as the pinnacle of a footballer’s career, so Silva’s comments shouldn’t necessarily be taken as a dig at Newcastle.
