Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of several Liverpool players who will be glad to see the back of the 2020/21 campaign. He, like many other Reds performers, has simply failed to scale the glorious highs of the last 18 months.

Jurgen Klopp’s team have relinquished their title with a whimper and injuries to several key players has imposed a serious detriment on their season.

Recently, Alexander-Arnold has come under fire for a period of bad form which ultimately led to England boss Gareth Southgate chopping him from his recent World Cup qualifying squad.

Klopp has stayed loyal to his right-back, however, allowing him the platform to work his back into some sort of form.

That decision looks to be working. On Saturday, the right-back scored the winner as Liverpool won at Anfield for the first time in weeks and last night he shone against Real Madrid.

The Reds drew 0-0 to go out of the Champions League 3-1 on aggregate and Alexander-Arnold was instrumental during a dominant display for the hosts.

Some statistics from Who Scored showcased the Liverpool man in superb form during last night’s clash.

Alexander-Arnold completed six key passes, attempted 17 crosses and made three interceptions.

The number of crosses highlights something that we knew was already in Alexander-Arnold’s locker. His ability to get forward has never been in question – even to his critics.

With three interceptions, however, it shows that on his day he can be capable defensively, although his all-round defensive game does need some work.

The 22-year-old earns around £75,000-a-week at Anfield and still looks like a player who can continue improving.

Although Alexander-Arnold has endured an indifferent season, his last couple of performances have proved that form is temporary and class is permanent.
