£15m Tottenham star’s Euro 2020 stat should set alarm bells ringing for Nuno - TBR View

Tottenham manager Nuno Espirito Santo has had the chance to look at some of his squad now in pre-season, but there are some who are yet to return from international duty.

One player that could make an intriguing link up with new Spurs boss Nuno is midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Hojbjerg, 25, has been part of a Denmark side that reached the semi-finals at this summer’s Euro 2020 competition.

He was an ever-present in the centre of the park for the Danes, who were eventually beaten by England.

The Spurs ace finished the Euro 2020 tournament with the second-joint highest number of assists (three).

Hojbjerg directly created three goals like Luke Shaw, Marco Verratti and Dani Olmo, while Steven Zuber set up four.

The alarm bells should be ringing for Nuno because it’s an indication that he’s got far more attacking ability than he showed last year in a Spurs shirt.

One assist against Belgium came after pressing high from midfield and sliding a pass on the edge of the box. In addition, he threaded a great ball between the lines to create against Russia. He was also involved in a counter-attack for another against Russia.

He’s a defensive midfielder by trade that is great with tackling and interceptions, but there is more to his game.

His international success playing as a midfield two in a 3-4-3 Denmark system is identical to one Nuno often liked to use at Wolves, so he could be a manager that helps find an attacking spark at club level.

Hojbjerg should target big second season at Tottenham

It was a quiet end to the 2020/21 campaign from the entire Spurs group. However, Hobjerg mainly enjoyed a decent first year in north London.

He settled extremely quickly following his £15million (Sky Sports) move last summer from Southampton, so during his second season he should be able to hit the ground running.

The central midfielder has five assists in 53 Spurs appearances. Also, he had just six assists in 134 Southampton games.

It’s an area of his game that Nuno should identify improving, as his international form highlights a hidden strength.
