Ben Gibson has wished his former side Middlesbrough and new manager Jonathan Woodgate the best of luck on Twitter as the Teesside outfit kick off the Championship season – and Boro fans have urged Gibson to return.

Middlesbrough travel to newly-promoted Luton Town, where they will be looking to pick up three points in Woodgate’s first game in charge as manager. It is also Graeme Jones’ first game in charge as Luton manager.

Gibson, 26, only managed five appearances following his £15million move (Lancashire Telegraph) to Burnley. A hernia problem and subsequent injuries kept the former Boro captain on the sidelines.

Now fit, Gibson has been linked with plenty of clubs including Leeds United and Aston Villa. Nephew of Boro owner Steve Gibson, the defender posted a good luck message to Boro and Woodgate ahead of Friday night’s clash.

Middlesbrough have sold key centre-back Aden Flint this summer for a fee believed to be in the region of £4million, joining Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City. Woodgate is yet to replace the colossal defender.

Middlesbrough fans reacted to Gibson’s Tweet ahead of Friday night’s Championship opener against Luton, and many supporters have urged the player to return to the Riverside this summer – 12 months after leaving the club.
