Chelsea’s current squad is incredibly young and do not boast much experience, but several players are showing signs of becoming big stars for the club.
Being seen as a legend of any football club is tricky to do, but particularly one as historic and successful as Chelsea.
John Terry, Frank Lampard, and Didier Drogba won countless trophies for the Blues during a golden period, and modern-day Chelsea players are often compared to them because of that.
That generation of Chelsea is seen as the measuring stick for what all future players have to try and live up to if they want to meet the fans’ standards, and one of Enzo Maresca’s players is doing just that.

Marc Cucurella is on course to overtake Ashley Cole as Chelsea’s greatest left-back
Marc Cucurella has been a controversial figure at times during his Chelsea career, especially in the early stages, when he made erratic mistakes that frustrated fans.
However, under Maresca, Cucurella has proven why the club paid £56 million for him from Brighton in 2022, as he has been a reliable performer for the Blues.
Cucurella has done so well that he’s now reached the point where he could statistically end up overtaking Ashley Cole as the best left-back in the history of the club.
Cole is widely regarded as not only Chelsea’s greatest left-back but also one of the best to have ever played the position in the Premier League. Therefore, being seen as better than him would be a significant deal.
While Cucurella might not boast the silverware that Cole picked up during his time at Chelsea, he is delivering more than him on the pitch from an individual perspective.
| Player | Cucurella | Cole |
| Appearances | 123 | 337 |
| Goals | 8 | 7 |
| Assists | 11 | 33 |
He has also become solid defensively, which has led to Cucurella becoming Spain’s first-choice full-back.
If he plays another 200 games and keeps up this output rate, he will likely deliver more goals and assists than Cole, which could put him above the former England international.
Even if fans don’t see Cucurella as a better player than Cole when all is said and done, if he’s able to maintain his current standard over a lengthy period, he’ll undoubtedly become a Blues legend and add his name alongside the iconic figures who fans love to this day.
He has claimed to have already signed an extension (not confirmed by the club), and his previous deal ended in 2028, so he’s pledged a long-term future at the club, which I can throw in as a second H2 to back up the idea that he will get the game time.
Marc Cucurella is ready to commit his future to Chelsea
While Cucurella might be over 200 appearances away from matching what Cole did at Chelsea, the Spain international is showing no signs of slowing down.
After Ben Chilwell’s departure, Cucurella has no competition, which means Maresca heavily relies on him to play a lot of football.
In the summer, he told Diario AS that he had already signed a contract extension with Chelsea, although the club had yet to comment on that situation.
“Yes, it’s done. We already did it.
“I’m very happy, the club gave me the confidence, and I’m very happy to be here. Hopefully, I will have a great year.”
Cucurella’s original deal was due to expire in 2028, but he has now signed beyond that, showcasing his desire to commit his long-term future to Chelsea.
