£10m striker says he really regrets not signing for Liverpool

Liverpool have had their fair share of transfer near misses over the years.

Indeed, there are tons of stories about players who almost signed for Liverpool.

Sami Khedira almost joined Liverpool at one point, while Liverpool nearly signed Jan Oblak instead of Alisson back in the day.

Meanwhile, just this summer, Marc Guehi nearly joined Liverpool too.

Speaking on the Beast Mode On Podcast, another player has now shared how they almost joined the Reds at one point.

Bobby Zamora nearly joined Liverpool

According to Bobby Zamora, he turned down the chance to join Liverpool from Fulham.

Roy Hodgson went to Liverpool from Fulham back in 2010, and, at that time, Zamora says there was a £10m offer on the table from the Reds.

However, the striker says he rejected Liverpool to stay at Fulham due to the fact he’d just had twins and didn’t want to unsettle his family.

“They bid for me, £10m, the same as Spurs as well, Harry Redknapp was there at Spurs and they both bid £10m for me,” Zamora said.

“I had my daughters, two weeks later the bids came in. It was a really good squad, Europa League final, everyone is happy where I was and I’d just had my twins, I had nobody up north in Liverpool.

“That is my genuine regret in football, I have two, but that is one, that I didn’t just go to Liverpool and sign for five years there, stupid.”

Bobby Zamora’s record under Roy Hodgson

Zamora probably wouldn’t have been the type of player to massively move the dial if he’d signed for Liverpool.

Indeed, while Zamora was a decent player, he was hardly a Golden Boot contender or an England regular.

That said, Zamora did have a great relationship with Roy Hodgson at Fulham, and maybe he’d have been able to help Liverpool adopt Hodgson’s style with greater ease.

Hodgson struggled at Liverpool, but he wasn’t a bad manager. In fact, just this week, Wayne Rooney praised Hodgson.

This deal didn’t quite work out, but it is interesting to ponder what could have been if Zamora had joined the Reds at this point in his career.
