£100m Tottenham target has no release clause, he’s just signed a new contract

Tottenham Hotspur may have just been dealt a blow in their long-term pursuit of Brighton Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson.

The Athletic have now shared a report detailing that Ferguson’s new Brighton deal does not contain any release clause.

Of course, this could now make any proposed deal a lot harder for club’s interested in the imposing 19-year-old striker.

Brighton sold Moises Caicedo to Chelsea for £115m this summer, and will now have the bargaining position to demand even more for Ferguson.

An asking price of £100m has often been touted, however it does seem as if Brighton may now seek more for a striker under fresh contract.

Tottenham are said to be long-term admirers of Ferguson, someone they envisage as a potential Harry Kane replacement.

But any deal would now seem difficult for a club who still needs to improve their squad in several areas.

Squad building under Ange Postecoglou is still in its early stages, and such a significant outlay on one player wouldn’t seem advisable.

Of course, some fans may be slightly perplexed by such a high asking price for a striker who is not starting regularly. 

Ferguson has dealt with minor injuries this season, and is often rotated like the rest of the Brighton squad.

And were a top Premier League side convinced to sanction such a pricey deal, they may need further reassurance over the striker’s consistency.

Right now, a deal for Ferguson does seem pretty untenable for a top side, given the price and his subsequent top flight minutes.

So whilst Tottenham fans may be disappointed to see these new details about Ferguson’s Brighton contract, it probably doesn’t change the landscape of any deal.

Brighton will demand a huge fee for Ferguson – one that doesn’t look brilliant value right now.

And whilst the focus is understandably on those incoming at Spurs, given key players recently lost to injury, one Tottenham star is now keen on a timely depature
