£100k-a-week Everton man ‘a little bit disappointed’ with himself following Monday’s loss to Chelsea

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has admitted he’s disappointed with the penalty he conceded for Carlo Ancelotti’s Toffees on Monday night, and says he’ll “keep aiming to get better and better”.

The 27-year-old has been in impressive form over the past few weeks, keeping consecutive clean sheets in victories over Southampton, Liverpool and West Brom.

And on Monday night, Pickford made some great reflex saves in the Premier League meeting with Chelsea, but ultimately cost his side in taking down Kai Havertz for Jorginho’s 65th-minute spot kick.

“I’m a little bit disappointed with conceding the penalty, but I’ll keep building and keep aiming to get better and better,” the £100,000-a-week star told the Everton media team.

Prior to his clean sheet run, Pickford was out for four Everton games in February, his first extended absence since joining the Blues from Sunderland in 2017.

And while the England international says the break “may have helped me”, his desire to play every minute possible for Everton made his spell on the sidelines tough to contend with.

“It was horrible,” said Pickford. “I don’t like being injured. I want to be ready to be called upon in every game possible for the club.

“It took a little bit of extra time [to return to full fitness] than I wanted it to.

“As soon as I was ready, I was itching to play. I was training hard in the gym and getting ready for when I was called upon.

“Sometimes a little break can help, but it’s not what I want. I want to be playing every week. I felt I was in a good place anyway [before the injury].

“I think my form is good. Mentally, I’m in a very good place and I’m making those saves and trying to give the lads the best opportunity to get a result.”

Pickford has been in superb form lately and, although he did make a mistake with the penalty, credit to him for admitting he’s disappointed and pledging to make amends.

Everton are still in a great position, just four points off the top four, and with several winnable fixtures in their run-in, they will hopefully do enough to get over the line.
