Julian Baumgartlinger (Austria)

Austria are considered to be a dark horse by many, mainly due to their star man David Alaba, but there are also a large number of talented players who will also be looking to make an impact.

Alongside Alaba in midfield, Baumgartlinger doesn’t get the plaudits he deserves on the national scene. A maverick in Mainz’s midfield in the Bundesliga over the last few years, he’s already made a move this summer, to Bayer Leverkusen where he will be testing himself in the Champions League next season.

Baumgartlinger even has a case to be considered Austria’s most important player, providing the perfect link between defence and their growing, exciting attack. With the aforementioned Alaba, and Zlatko Junuzovic, the three are a very dynamic midfield whose games compliment each other to provide everything you would want in the centre of the park. This Austrian side will surprise a few people, and Baumgartlinger will play a quiet, but very important role.

Joao Mario (Portugal)

Anyone who watched the under-21 Euros last summer will know about Joao Mario. The playmaker, along with a number of other Portuguese stars, set the tournament alight, and despite not winning it, and Fernando Santos has allowed the core of that side to grow together in the national team.

Renato Sanches has already been mentioned, but with William Carvalho, Rafa Silva, Andre Gomes and Joao Mario, Portugal have room for optimism going forward. Mario is already attracting attention from Chelsea and Mourinho’s Manchester United, but a strong tournament could see the giants of European football flocking around the Sporting midfielder.
