1 goal, 76 passes, 98.7% passing accuracy - Liverpool star a real colossus for his country
Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk is truly back to his best – not only for the Reds, but also for the Netherlands.
Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool charges are now looking great again, thanks in no small part to the 30-year-old’s return to action.
Likewise, the Netherlands have looked impressive since Van Dijk returned to the Oranje backline.
In the five games since the Liverpool ace returned to the Netherlands line-up, they’ve won four and drawn one of their qualifiers.
While the Dutch were always going to be heavy favourites against Gibraltar last time out, Van Dijk clocked up some impressive statistics.
The 6ft 4in ace broke the deadlock with his first international goal in three years, a fine header in the ninth minute.
Van Dijk imposed himself well in the World Cup qualifier and put in an assured display at the back.
As well as his goal, Van Dijk mustered a further three efforts, made one key pass and delivered four accurate long balls.
He also boasted a passing accuracy of 98.7 percent from 76 passes, won six aerial challenges and made two tackles, two interceptions and one clearance.
The Netherlands ran out 6-0 winners over Gibraltar, with Memphis Depay netting a brace and Denzel Dumfries, Arnaut Danjuma and Donyell Malen also getting on the scoresheet.
Van Dijk will obviously have much harder shifts for club and country, but nonetheless it’s great to see him give his all and show his quality no matter the opposition.
Holland have 19 points to their name, sitting two clear of Norway in Group G.
The two nations will meet in their final group game next month.
