Many thought that Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez would leave the club during the last transfer window after he won the PFA Player of the Year award while also being integral in Leicester’s first Premier League title success.
N’Golo Kante made the move Chelsea and has benefitted immensely, and it was surprising the winger made the credible decision to stay with the Foxes for another season. Despite being way off the heights of their 15-16 campaign, the club has secured another league in England’s top flight which is a very good achievement.
However, as the transfer window circles round again, rumours and speculation surround Mahrez’s future at the club. But where will he end up?
Barcelona were said to be heavily interested in the Leicester man after his phenomenal campaign with the Foxes last season. However, the Catalan club’s interest still remains and the move to Spain is Mahrez’s dream, according to the Telegraph.
Given his most recent campaign it is difficult to see this happening. He has only managed five goals and three assists in 32 appearances in the Premier League. His performances in the Champions League have been more impressive, though. In nine games, he has scored four and assisted two.
It is difficult to see Mahrez starting ahead of any of Barcelona’s trio of Messi, Suarez and Neymar, but the 26-year-old could provide valuable squad depth which could allow them to compete on all fronts, both domestically and in Europe.
Despite the quality Arsenal have in attack, the strength beyond their starting eleven can be questioned. Many times this season, the Gunners have suffered without Alexis Sanchez and this has had a catastrophic effect on their season.
With Sanchez’s future uncertain at the club as he enters the final 12 months of his contract, Riyad Mahrez could either be the man to replace him or provide cover in both wide positions for Arsenal.
The Algerian would not have to move far and would still be playing in on the world’s best and most competitive environments. The winger could flourish in an Arsenal side that is likely to be rejuvenated with additions this summer.
Another potential suitor for Mahrez is another English side, Liverpool. The Reds’ squad depth has really been challenged this year, most noticeably after Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane were dealt injury setbacks.
The Merseyside club have not looked the same without these two in their side, but with the quality Mahrez has to offer, he could be the perfect player fill in for either winger.
Of course, the Algerian would have to adapt his game to suit Jurgen Klopp’s aggressive and non-stop style of play, while Liverpool would have to be prepared to pay big for the Leicester man with his transfer fee and wages.
