A summer move for Leicester winger Riyad Mahrez is becoming more and more of a possibility with Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, yesterday coming out and suggesting a move for the 26-year-old is a possibility, as reported by BeIN Sports.
The Frenchman admitted that he was a fan of the winger, and he is not the only one. After all, it was the efforts of Mahrez alongside those Leicester heroes who drove the club to their first ever Premier League title.
His seventeen goals and eleven assists were crucial for the Foxes in their title-winning season and he deservedly won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year Award.
Even this term, in what has been a troubling campaign for Leicester, the Algerian managed ten goals and five assists in 45 games, with four of those goals in nine Champions League appearances – an impressive statistic.
This potential move is likely dependent on the futures of Gunners’ pair Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil. Without Champions League football, questions have been asked as to whether Arsenal’s best attacking talents will choose to stay at the Emirates stadium.
If they do remain with the Gunners, the arrival of Riyad Mahrez would help form an impressive and talented attacking trio.
Or, of course, the sale of one or both of these stars could cover the costs of Mahrez, who, despite not having a particularly impressive season, would still command a significant fee.
Arsenal’s chances of signing Mahrez have been boosted by the fact the player himself has asked Leicester City to allow him to leave this summer, as reported by Sky Sports.
At 26, the Algerian is approaching the peak of his career and a move away to a top Premier League club portrays his desire to play at a higher level surrounded by better players. If he was to move, it would be interesting to see what the Leicester man is capable of.
With Wenger signing a two-year deal, there is now an element of stability surrounding Arsenal, a club who suffered under the immense speculation surrounding many of their key figures last season.
An ambitious Mahrez would be joining a team that are looking to bounce back from this season’s disappointments by challenging for the title next term. By signing a Premier League winner, Arsenal would certainly benefit from the Algerian’s arrival.
