West Ham target Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney – would a move work for both parties?

Written by

Sky Sports claim that West Ham United are tracking the situation of Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney and could launch a summer move for the experienced forward if the Red Devils allow him to leave the club at the end of the season.

What would Rooney bring to West Ham?

Experience, goals and one of the best track records in the business. Where he would fit into the side would remain to be seen, but Slaven Bilic would most likely play him in a number ten role, as vacated by Dimitri Payet in the January transfer window. The England international may bring quality, but it is unclear for how much longer he will be able to maintain his high level of performance having been dropped by both club and country this season. The biggest concern for the Hammers will surely be whether or not he would be prepared to accept lower wages to move to the London Stadium, and whether he would do enough to justify what would still be some big wages for the club.

Would West Ham be a good move for Rooney?

It all depends on where Rooney feels that he is at in his career. At only 31 years of age, he may feel that he still has some time left at his peak and continue to play in the Premier League, which is likely something that he will have to do if he is to retain a place in the England squad as he has hoped to do for the 2018 World Cup. Everton is another potential destination which would allow him to move him and may be more attractive with the offer of European football possible, but West Ham may hope to make a more attractive financial offer. That said, if money is all that counts for Rooney then he’d be far better served heading off to the United States, Middle East or China.

It does seem likely that Rooney will depart the Red Devils in the summer, with there seemingly no way back under Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford, but West Ham may be just one of many clubs to make him an offer. The move could come down to whether or not Rooney wants to stay in England or not, but given his hopes of a future with the national side he may be forced to do so, and the Hammers could be one of the leading candidates in that case.
