Manchester United recorded a 3-0 win away to Sunderland to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
It was a much better performance from Jose Mourinho’s men and the fact that they scored three goals will be a confidence booster.
The home side are sleepwalking towards relegation and they showed no sign that they possess the desire and quality to get out of their perilous position.
Here are three things that we learnt on Sunday afternoon…
Henrikh Mkhitaryan has a big part to play in the long-term future at Old Trafford
It has been a mixed season for the Armenian international as he has been in-and-out of the team for various reasons. However, he has the quality to become one of the leading players in this league and he showed that at the Stadium of Light.
The home side were always going to be nervy at the back and the intelligence that Mkhitaryan possesses allowed him to put the Black Cats to the sword. He ended the match with a goal and it was superbly taken, displaying his composure in the penalty area.
Although he was brought in to add creativity, his goals have been invaluable this season and Manchester United will be hoping that he kicks on in his second season at the club.
Throughout the match, he completed 78% of his passes, three dribbles and one tackle. It wasn’t the best performance of the weekend, but it highlighted how he is capable of contributing across the pitch.
He only has one chance to shoot and he made sure that he found the back of the net. It is this sort of finishing that United have lacked this season, but in Mkhitaryan, they have a player who can supply goals from midfield.
There will be another summer of change at Old Trafford as they attempt to become a serious title challenger once again, but the 28-year-old is one player that should be a fixture of this team for years to come.
