The Sunderland striker is the top-scoring English striker available to Gareth Southgate, due to Harry Kane’s injury and has been in fine form this season. Defoe has managed to impress operating a lone striker role in a struggling Black Cats side.
The former Tottenham man has scored 14 times this season – 11 times more than any of his teammates. Victor Anichebe is Sunderland’s second highest goalscorer with just three goals.
Defoe has found the target 22 times and maintains a 58% shot accuracy, only four players in Sunderland’s side have bettered him, although they have had considerably fewer attempts. He has also performed just as admirably off the field as well, being a key figure in supporting young Bradley Lowery’s fight against cancer.
Defoe has finally been given another chance on the international stage. With a lot of firepower up front, he must seize this opportunity.
