Three key stats as Arsenal returned to winning ways on the road against Middlesbrough

Written by

Arsenal kept themselves in the hunt for a top four finish this season after battling to a narrow victory over relegation strugglers Middlesbrough at the Riverside Stadium on Monday evening.

Going into the match ten points adrift of Manchester City in fourth place, Alexis Sanchez curled in a superb free-kick from the edge of the area just before half-time to give the visitors the lead.

Middlesbrough responded well after the break though, and Stewart Downing’s cross was met by the outstretched leg of Alvaro Negredo to poke home to give him his eighth goal of the season.

Despite going close twice through Daniel Ayala and Ben Gibson, it was Arsenal that re-took the lead with 20 minutes remaining as Mesut Ozil fired past Brad Guzan from close-range.

Arsenal held on to secure a critical three points for their Champions League ambitions, taking them back to within seven points of the top four, whilst Middlesbrough remain six adrift of safety.
