Liverpool kept themselves in the hunt for a top-four spot at the end of the season as they saw off the challenge of Everton in a hotly-contested Merseyside derby at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.
Sadio Mane’s wonderful solo goal opened the scoring after just eight minutes only for defender Matthew Pennington – playing his first game of the season – to equalise just before the half hour.
Parity only lasted a matter of minutes for the visitors though as the excellent Philippe Coutinho fired past Joel Robles into the top corner to restore the hosts lead.
Liverpool continued to dominate in the second half and sealed all three points when Coutinho was once again involved, slipping in substitute Divock Origi to hammer into the back of the net.
Jurgen Klopp’s side rise into third ahead of Manchester City’s trip to Arsenal on Sunday evening, whilst Everton remain in seventh, now seven points outside of the Champions League spots.
