Today’s reports from The Sun suggest that Tottenham are hot on the trail of Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke. Allegedly, the White Hart Lane outfit are preparing a £20 million bid for the Villain’s striker.
Following an impressive display of form throughout the latter half of the season – a period in which he scored 11 of his 13 total league goals – the powerful Belgian has attracted plenty of attention and is thought to be hoping for a move away from Villa Park this season.
Reports suggest that Mauricio Pochettino is desperate to secure another striker to relieve some of the goal-scoring burden from Harry Kane’s shoulders. The young Englishman enjoyed a tremendous breakthrough season, but for Spurs to progress they cannot simply rely on one man to consistently hit the back of the net.
The touted price is conspicuous, especially considering that a bid of £32.5 million would activate a buy-out clause in Benteke’s contract. Villa are likely to hold out for the full value of their star man, and therefore this approach – for over £10 million less -will probably be deemed unacceptable.
The offer will inevitably spark a bidding war between his many suitors. Tottenham remain at 16/1, behind Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea, in the Sky Bet odds. Meanwhile, Arsenal and Champions League contenders Atletico Madrid and Roma are all in contention for his signature.
Following the lack of quality up front at Anfield this season, the Reds understandably remain the clear favourites. However, Benteke’s suitability to Brendan Rodgers’ playing-style is up for debate. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Eden Hazard has expressed his desire to see his compatriot at Stamford Bridge, as per Sky Sports.
It would take an impressive swing for Spurs to land their man, especially considering the calibre of opposition that they find themselves up against. Ultimately, the golden nugget of European (be it Champions or Europa League) football could see them miss out.
