According to the Mirror, Southampton will look to sign 27-year-old Espanyol defender Hector Moreno in the event that they lose defensive stalwart Toby Alderweireld.
The Atletico Madrid defender made 26 appearances this term, impressing his season-long loan spell at St Mary’s. However, interest from the likes of Premier League rivals Tottenham could see his stay cut short.
Rival interest, as well as a reported fee of £11 million, may force manager Ronald Koeman to look at alternative targets, with Mexico international centre-back Hector Moreno touted as an ideal replacement.
The Espanyol centre-back, who has been capped a total of 58 times for his country, is understood to be available for around £8 million. It is just a question of whether he can have the same immediate impact as Alderwiereld.
Moreno’s experience alone would likely see him succeed in the Premier League. Having played against some of the toughest attackers in world football, at both club and international level, he would prove an impressive acquisition.
