Newcastle United need to be shrewd in the market as they attempt to give Rafa Benitez the squad that he need to compete in the Premier League.
They have signed five players during this window and two of them have been Spanish under-21 internationals.
The Magpies’ boss knows the Spanish market well and it could be one that he continues to shop in during the coming weeks.
Pete Jenson, a British journalist based in Spain, spoke to 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast and suggested Lucas Vazquez has a potential target. He said:
“There is overbooking at Real Madrid and Rafa Benitez does know the club very well.
“I think winger Lucas Vazquez is another he might look at and that’s one of the advantages of taking Rafa as their manager.”
It has been known that Newcastle are in the market for another winger and a move for Vazquez would certainly fit the bill, if he was available this summer.
There will be other interest in the player, but Benitez gives the Magpies a chance of landing him based on his contacts at the Bernabeu.
Although this is not a concrete link, Benitez is a manager that looks at all options available to him in the market and Vazquez’s name has likely been brought up at some point.
What would Vazquez bring to St James’ Park?
If a player has played for Real Madrid, it is safe to assume that they are a technically gifted footballer and Vazquez is that.
The 26-year-old is an excellent dribbler, who has quick feet and a willingness to run at opposition defenders.
His confidence never wavers and more often than not, he backs that up by getting the better if his marker.
A major strength of his attacking play is his crossing ability and that would be a dangerous weapon in a physical league like the Premier League.
However, he offers more than attacking threat, as the winger enjoys working hard for the team and his defensive commitment is worthy of praise.
Newcastle have a solid squad and one that will be able to compete in the Premier League, but it doesn’t possess the talent required to finish as high as Benitez will want.
The manager realises this and he will be pressing the board hard for an injection of quality before the window closes.
Vazquez would provide that and his signing would provide a statement to the rest of the league that the Magpies mean business.
He may only be an impact player for Real Madrid, but the 26-year-old has lots of ability and it would be a real coup if Newcastle were able to bring him to the club, even if the deal was only a temporary one.
How likely is a move?
At this stage, it is very unlikely given that there hasn’t been a report of Newcastle making a move.
However, it is interesting that Jenson mentioned Vazquez by name as it suggests that he could be on his way out of Real Madrid.
If that was the case, Benitez would surely look into whether it would be possible to take him to St James’ Park.
