Pep Guardiola has already invested heavily in his defence this summer, but the Daily Mail say that he could invest further by bringing in Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson.
What would Gibson bring to the Etihad?
Gibson showed last season that he has the quality for the top flight. Boro had one of the best defensive records in the league despite relegation, and Gibson was at the heart of that as he bossed the backline.
The centre-back also offers consistency and reliability, something that other options lack for Guardiola. The likes of Nicolas Otamendi and John Stones have struggled to show either of those two features, but Gibson will be confident that he could bring those traits to Manchester.
The 24-year-old also boasts homegrown status, something that would be highly valued by Guardiola and Manchester City given their very international squad. That will see his value soar at the Etihad and whilst he may be more expensive than other squad, options, it makes him a whole lot more attractive.
Is a move likely?
West Brom have already had a £20 million bid rejected for the 24-year-old and Boro are clearly not willing to sell. Gibson started for the club against Wolves on Saturday and will be determined to retain their key man having invested heavily themselves in a bid to make an immediate return to the top flight.
However, the lure and wealth of City could be too much for Gibson and Boro to resist. Gibson is unlikely to be first choice as he is in the Championship side, but he would get game time and the opportunity to play in the Champions League too.
For the defender, it may also improve his chances of making the England squad ahead of the World Cup in the summer. Having been on the fringes of the squad last summer, playing second tier football is unlikely to help his case.
