Manchester United vs West Ham: Premier League match preview, likely line-ups and score prediction

Written by

Two sides who have made several new additions will come face to face at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon as West Ham travel to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. West Ham will be hoping to improve on last year when they earned a 1-1 draw thanks to an early opening goal from Diafra Sakho in late November.

Recent form

Manchester United had a mixed pre-season and were given a reality check on Tuesday in their first competitive game against Real Madrid. Having beaten the Spanish side by penalty shoot-out in a friendly, Zinedine Zidane’s side comfortably saw off the challenge of Jose Mourinho’s side in the Super Cup game.

West Ham recorded just the one pre-season win, over Championship side Fulham, with three draws and two defeats completing their schedule. That may be cause for concern, but with a number of new signings having joined the squad, fans will not be reading too much into the friendly results.

Likely line-ups

For Manchester United, it will be a very similar line-up to that which faced Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup on Tuesday night. Eric Bailly will come in for Jesse Lingard as Mourinho will once again favour a 3-5-2 formation with Marcus Rashford unlikely to start behind Romelu Lukaku, with Henrikh Mkhitaryan preferred.

Slaven Bilic will continue to deploy the 4-2-3-1 formation he used last season, but at least four players are expected to make their debuts in Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta, Marko Arnautovic and former United favourite Javier Hernandez.

Team news

Eric Bailly and Phil Jones will once again be available having been suspended for United’s first competitive game of the season as it came in European competition in their Super Cup clash with Real Madrid. Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Marcos Rojo are all still out with long-term injuries.

It is still too soon for Michail Antonio though, as he battles to overcome a major hamstring injury suffered in the second half of last season. Aaron Cresswell and Manuel Lanzini are also in a race to be fit, with only the latter likely to be risked at Old Trafford.

Match prediction: Manchester United 1-0 West Ham

West Ham will have a lot of new faces to integrate and it seems written in the stars that Chicharito will bag a debut goal. That said, United are defensively strong and whilst they don’t score many, their quality in midfield and attack should be enough to scrape a win.
