Manchester United round-up: Mourinho on Ronaldo rumours; midfielder desperate for move; Nainggolan contract talks

Written by

Amid speculation earlier this summer that Cristiano Ronaldo could make a sensational return to Old Trafford, Jose Mourinho remained quiet. Now, though, the manager has spoken out as he told the press that he would not be pursuing any such deal, with BBC Sport quoting him as saying:

“I am not going to get my club to waste time on players who are mission impossible. Ronaldo is such an important player for his club. A player of great economic power. We have not been able to find any reason that could have made us think that Ronaldo could leave.”

The rumours were enough to excite United fans in pre-season when transfer activity was dull, but with Romelu Lukaku now signed, fans have something to get excited about again. With the Belgian international in the squad, it is hard to see how the Red Devils could afford the Real Madrid superstar anyway.

Whilst a Mourinho and Cristiano reunion now looks unlikely, a reunion between the manager and midfielder Nemanja Matic could be on the cards. The Sun say that the Serbian is desperate to move to Old Trafford, in what would be a £40 million deal. Chelsea are reluctant to sell their man to potential title rivals but are aware that he has just 12 months left on his contract.

Matic was a regular at Stamford Bridge and formed a key part of Mourinho’s then-Chelsea side. In Manchester, he could fill a similar role alongside Ander Herrera in the middle of the park which would surely be one of the most dominant midfields in the Premier League.

Another option could be Roma midfield Radja Nainggolan, who has been linked with a move to Manchester in recent days. However, Sky Sports Italia journalist Angelo Mangiante has revealed on Twitter that the Belgian is close to agreeing a new contract at his current club to remain in Italy.

That could be a huge blow for Mourinho and co. if he was a target, but with the likes of Matic and Tottenham’s Eric Dier also linked, there are other options on the table.
