Jose Mourinho believes that his side will be in contention for the Premier League title next season as the Portuguese manager revealed in his pre-match press conference as he told Sky Sports and the assembled media:
“This season we are not close to winning the league. There are clubs with more stability than us, better squads, more time to work. I cannot say that but I’m pretty sure that from a mental and a tactical point of view, we have had a very good evolution. If, in the next transfer window, we manage to be successful, I think we can [challenge for the title].”
After spending big last summer and with more heavy investment expected ahead of next season, many were expecting the Red Devils to perform better this campaign. With an EFL Cup title and Europa League final, that has eased pressure on Mourinho, but a title challenge will be expected next season.
However, Mourinho could have to do that without goalkeeper David de Gea as he continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid. Now, the Manchester Evening News have linked another goalkeeper as his potential replacement, with 23-year-old Benfica number one Ederson the latest name to be on the radar.
With 24 clean sheets from 39 games this season, the Brazilian has put himself on the world stage with impressive displays in the league and in the Champions League, though he is still yet to make his debut for the Brazilian national team under manager Tite having been left out by Dunga before he was sacked last year.
Another player rumoured to be on his way to Old Trafford is Eric Dier, but the Daily Mail state that the holding midfielder has not informed Tottenham of any wish to leave the club in the near future as the White Hart Lane club remain hugely reluctant to allow any of their key players to depart.
Jose Mourinho has marked the England international as a long term replacement for ageing midfielder Michael Carrick and could be forced to spend big this summer if he is to bring the former Sporting Lisbon man to Manchester.
