In good news for Jose Mourinho, local newspaper the Manchester Evening News claim that holding midfielder Eric Dier is very keen on a move to Old Trafford and may look to engineer a move away from Tottenham. Dier supposedly grew up a United fan and modeled his game on Roy Keane, Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand as a youngster.
His position has been weakened by the fact that he signed a new contract last year, which is due to keep him in north London until 2021, only encouraging Daniel Levy in his determination to keep the England international. Given that he lost his first team place to Victor Wanyama last season, a huge fee may make him reconsider.
An alternative could be Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic, with the Telegraph reporting that Chelsea players believe he is on his way out, as he has returned to pre-season training on his own away from the rest of the squad. The reason for his individual training is said to be a pre-existing injury, but the squad are fully aware that Matic wants a move to Manchester.
With no new deal at Stamford Bridge on the cards after 18 months of negotiations, it seems likely that the Serbian will be moving on this summer if a suitor can be found. United were keen, but with Dier now seemingly an obtainable target, they may prefer to move for the Tottenham man instead.
Another potential addition could be a returning hero, as the Mirror say that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is preparing an announcement on his future in the coming weeks. The 35-year-old’s contract at Old Trafford has now expired but he continues to train at the club whilst recovering from a knee injury. The Swede revealed: “There will be a very big announcement soon, it will be huge.”
Ibrahimovic is currently in Manchester and was pictured recently on a night out in the city with his agent Mino Raiola which has only added to speculation that he may be set to sign a new deal for the Red Devils.
