Manchester United round-up: Ronaldo deal was possible; Leicester ace wanted United switch; Griezmann’s release clause shock

Written by

A move for Cristiano Ronaldo was possible for Manchester United this summer, according to The Sunday Times. They say that the Real Madrid ace could have been sold had Zinedine Zidane’s team completed the purchase of Monaco sensation Kylian Mbappe, who instead opted to join Paris Saint-Germain.

With that move off the table though, there was never any doubt that the Portugal international would remain at the Bernabeu. The news could serve as an indication that another deal could be possible in January or next summer if Real Madrid do bring in another superstar in the near future.

The Red Devils almost pulled off another shock signing on deadline day, as the Daily Star say that Riyad Mahrez left the Algerian national team camp in order to try to force through a move to Old Trafford. Mahrez submitted a transfer request in May but did not seal a move away before the deadline passed on Thursday evening.

Jose Mourinho was reportedly keen to add another winger to his Manchester United squad in the summer transfer window, but Leicester never received an official approach from the club for their winger. Now set to stay with the Foxes for at least half of the 2017/18 season.

Another deal could be on the cards for Manchester United, as Marca say that summer transfer target Antoine Griezmann’s release clause has been halved after the closure of the transfer window. The Frenchman signed a new deal until 2022 earlier this summer in a display of loyalty to his current club, refusing a move to Manchester.

That contract saw his release clause doubled in order to ensure that there was little chance of him moving on before the deadline passed with Atletico still under a transfer ban. Now, that has returned to the previous value of £91.6 million, down from £183.2 million earlier this summer.
