Liverpool could pull off one of the shock transfers of the summer after reports emerged in France that they could be about to bid for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Aubameyang, the 27-year-old Borussia Dortmund striker, scored 31 goals in the Bundesliga last season and has been linked with some of Europe’s top clubs, including Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
Now, French newspaper Le Parisien claim, as reported by the Daily Express and Daily Star, that Liverpool could make a bid in the region of £61 million for the striker, who is keen to team up with Jurgen Klopp again.
The suggestion that Liverpool could be ambitious enough to sign one of Europe’s best strikers would send a serious message to the rest of the Premier League.
Last season, the Reds were criticised for not having a true goalscorer in the side, or a pacey centre forward to stretch defenders, a problem which was evident when Sadio Mane was injured and away on Africa Cup of Nations duty.
There is no doubt if this story develops into a transfer, it would be quite a coup for Klopp.
If it does, fans will be hoping it doesn’t turn into a saga akin to attempts to sign Mohamed Salah from Roma, which according to Sky Sports, is reaching an end.
Salah has been on Liverpool’s radar all summer and the Reds had a £28 million bid turned down by the Italians last month.
Now Liverpool have reportedly offered £35 million plus add-ons for the Egyptian, although this is still below Roma’s valuation of the pacey winger.
There is no doubt that Salah would be a good signing for Liverpool, adding speed to an occasionally ponderous attack. He is also much better than the player who was close to joining the Reds in January 2014 before opting for Chelsea instead.
After such a long period of negotiating and Liverpool offering more money, fans will be frustrated if this one doesn’t go through.
One alternative could be Thomas Lemar of Monaco, who French outlet Telefoot believe is a target.
Arsenal are rumoured to be big fans of the winger, but reports in France are saying that Liverpool are also keen on the attacker.
The 21-year-old scored 19 goals last season as Monaco won their first league title for 17 years, and Lemar was one of the most impressive performers in a lethal attack.
There is plenty of interest in Lemar from around Europe, unsurprisingly, and Monaco will also be keen to hang onto their man after Bernado Silva departed for Manchester City. This one looks a long way off, but could be worth keeping an eye on.
