In what is proving to be one of the transfer sagas of the summer, it could be set for yet another twist. That is according to former Liverpool fan favourite Danny Murphy, who has revealed that he believes that Liverpool are close to sealing a deal for Southampton central defender Virgil Van Dijk. He told Sport360:
“Personally, the problem for Liverpool was more defensive (last season). I think the van Dijk thing is close. That would be a phenomenal signing. But there’s definitely more business to be done at Anfield.”
“Am I allowed to talk about this? I am not! Pretty much everything I could say would be a mistake.”
Speculation over the move has once again been revived after highly questionable claims on Twitter that Liverpool and Southampton had resumed talks.
It still seems possible that the Dutch international remains Liverpool’s top transfer target this summer as they have not yet been strongly linked with any possible alternatives. That may suggest that Van Dijk remains their priority in defence, with Van Dijk clearly having had his heart set on a move to Anfield.
Despite having officially withdrawn their interest, it would not be a surprise to see Liverpool go back in for the Saints star, following in the footsteps of Paris Saint-Germain who signed defender Thiago Silva only days after publicly withdrawing from the running for the then AC Milan star in similar circumstances.
Whilst it may be jumping the gun to suggest that a deal is close, it does seem likely that Van Dijk will eventually follow the likes of Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Sadio Mane in making the move north to Liverpool. It could turn out to be one of the most drawn out transfer stories of the summer.
