Chelsea have completed their second signing of the summer as Tieumoue Bakayoko joins from AS Monaco for a fee believed to be in the region of £40 million. This deal has been a protracted one and there had been fears that Manchester United may come in at the last minute, but the Premier League champions have got their man.
This is a much-needed boost for the club after they missed out on the signing of Romelu Lukaku and it will be hoped that Bakayoko’s arrival can lead to further progress in the transfer window. It could have an effect on Nemanja Matic’s future with the club as he has been linked to several teams, including Manchester United, Arsenal and Juventus. Sky Sports understand that the Blues are now reluctant to do business with United after they beat them to Lukaku.
Antonio Conte will continue with his 3-4-3 formation for the most-part and his transfer business reflects that. Bakayoko is a powerful midfielder, who impressed last season for Monaco in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League. He is only 22 and he is likely to improve significantly in the future. If the Chelsea boss can get the best from his new signing, he could have the best midfield in the league. A partnership of Bakayoko and Ngolo Kante should worry the rest of the top six.
Bakayoko is strong and mobile, which should make him the perfect fit for Chelsea. Last season, he averaged 2.2 tackles and 1.8 interceptions in the league. The 22-year-old is excellent at winning the ball back, but it is in transition that he is at his best. He averaged 1.8 successful dribbles per game and he is capable of launching attacks after winning the ball back. In this area, he will be an upgrade on Matic and that is why he is being brought in.
The midfielder should be able to adapt quickly to English football as he is a powerful player who thrives in physical contests. His aerial ability is very good and he could turn out to be one of the signings of the summer. Although Chelsea’s business has been slow, they are targeting players that suit their system and if they can now add two or three more players with a similar ability, they will be title contenders once again.
Here is how Twitter reacted to the signing of Bakayoko:
Tiemoue Bakayoko great signing for Chelsea. Incredible for Monaco last season. Also linked with Man United but told they did not make a bid

Manchester United fans weren’t too disappointed to miss out:
To be honest. Bakayoko isn't that good but Conte wants him to replace Matic. And we're buying Matic. Not very encouraging
