Tottenham crashed out of European competition for the second time this season after failing to overcome their first-leg deficit against Belgian outfit Gent at Wembley on Thursday evening.
Trailing 1-0 from the previous leg, Christian Eriksen’s neat early finish gave Spurs real hope of progressing to the Europa League last-16, but Harry Kane’s own-goal against the run of play gave the visitor’s a priceless away goal – ensuring the hosts needed to win by a two-goal margin.
Dele Alli’s reckless challenge just before half-time then gave Spurs an even bigger mountain to climb, but Victor Wanyama’s fine effort into the top corner set up an exciting final twenty minutes.
Yet with Tottenham’s ten-men pushing up the field looking for a winner Gent beat the midfield resistance and – with the help of Eric Dier’s mistake – slotted past Hugo Lloris to secure the tie.
Read on to see how Mauricio Pochettino’s side rated on yet another dismal night at Wembley.
Hugo Lloris – Nothing at all that he could have done about either of Gent’s goals, being let down by his defence on both occasions. Other than that he had literally nothing to do all game. 6.
