Newcastle United have made an enquiry for Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart. The Daily Mail report that Rafa Benitez wants the England international to improve his goalkeeping options and he believes the 30-year-old will provide his squad with a firm foundation.
According to the report, Pepe Reina and Willy Caballero have also been considered this summer, but Hart could be the most ambitious of the lot and really make a statement to the rest of the division. There is also interest from West Ham and from various other clubs, which means that it won’t be a straightforward deal to complete.
Would Hart be a good signing for Newcastle?
There will be Newcastle supporters that will scratch their head at this rumour as many believe that the squad doesn’t need another goalkeeper. They already have Tim Krul, Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot on their books, all of whom would consider themselves good enough to be a Premier League number one. However, Benitez is a perfectionist and the constant stories that link the Magpies to goalkeepers suggest that the Spaniard does want to sign one this summer.
Krul and Elliot have both had injury problems in recent seasons, while Darlow showed himself to untrustworthy at times last season. It is true that the former Nottingham Forest player was superb at times, especially when it came to shot stopping, but he always had an error in him.
Benitez will believe that a better number one can be brought in and Hart would be a good candidate. The England international has had a difficult 12 months, but he remains a huge talent and he could be very good again given the right environment. If the fee was fair, then it would be a good capture for Newcastle and one that would announce them as a significant player in the market.
How likely is a transfer to the North East?
This is a tentative article that only states that an enquiry has been made. During the transfer window, there will be a lots of moves that don’t progress past this stage and for that reason, it is not enough to suggest that a transfer is on the cards.
Newcastle are in the market for a goalkeeper and Joe Hart is available, which makes this an easy link to make. It is almost certain that the 30-year-old will have been offered to the Magpies, but that doesn’t mean that it will happen.
Hart will be on big wages and Newcastle may struggle to match them without breaking their current structure. In addition to that, Manchester City would demand a significant transfer fee as Hart is still regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the country.
This summer has been a frustrating one for the Magpies, as they have not been able to get deals done. Given that this would be complex and require a huge change in thinking at St James’ Park, it is difficult to see it getting completed. There may be interest, but it would be a surprise if Hart was to move to Newcastle this summer.
