Leicester continue their Champions League adventure with another trip to Spain on Wednesday. Having seen off Sevilla, the Foxes now come up against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid side.
Craig Shakespeare managed Leicester’s win over Sevilla spectacularly, but Atletico present a much sterner challenge. Simeone sets his side up so ensure they are hard to beat and with Antoine Greizmann in their ranks, they have a man capable of changing the outcome of a game with a moment of magic.
Atletico Madrid haven’t lost since February, when they fell to a 2-1 defeat to Barcelona. Los Rojiblancos claimed a draw against city rivals, Real Madrid, last time out, while they have also seen off Sevilla and Malaga during this unbeaten run. Star striker Antoine Griezmann has 23 goals to his name already this season and has found the back of the net four times already in the Champions League.
Leicester City have been spectacular following the sacking of Claudio Ranieri. They have won all but one of their games since the Italian’s departure. The Foxes were beaten by Everton 4-2 on Sunday, the game was a thriller from the start. Craig Shakespeare’s side looked good going forward but defensively, the back four looked poor and they were breached far too easily throughout the game.
Diego Simeone has a number of selection headaches coming into this tie, with Kevin Gamiero and Nicolas Gaitan ruled out. Miguel Moya, Sime Vrsaljko, Tiago and Augusto Fernandez are also expected to miss this fixture.
Namaplys Mendy and Wilfred Ndidi aren’t expected to feature but the most damning news for City fans is that Wes Morgan, their leader, and club captain, is ruled out with a back injury. His replacement, Yohan Benalouane, was poor against Everton, letting Romelu Lukaku get the better of him numerous times.
Verdict: Atletico Madrid 3-1 Leicester City
Most English football fans will be hoping Leicester can carry on their European fairytale, but Diego Simeone’s side may just prove to be too strong. With Jan Oblak in between the sticks and Antoine Griezmann scoring goals, the Foxes will find Atletico both hard to beat and difficult to contain.
The Spanish side should run out comfortable winners due to their superiority in class but the visitors will give 100% and they’ll be hoping that they can grab the away goal that keeps the tie open.
