Arsenal vs Bayern Munich: Match preview, likely line-ups and score prediction

Written by

Arsenal require a miracle if they are to get through to the next stage of the Champions League as they need to turn around a 5-1 deficit against Bayern Munich. The Gunners competed well in Germany until the injury to Laurent Koscielny, which sparked a collapse in the second half. It is difficult to see them winning this match, let alone the tie. However, Arsene Wenger will want his players to deliver a good performance to earn back some pride at the very least.

The last few weeks have been disastrous for the Premier League club and they now have little chance of competing for a major trophy during the run in. They are set to lose their Champions League place on Tuesday, unless something incredible takes place, while their league performances have seen them fall out of the top four. The pressure is building on Wenger and he needs things to significantly improve before the end of the season, otherwise, it could turn sour for him.

After a slow start to their league campaign, Bayern Munich are now seven points clear at the top of the Bundesliga and closing in on another title victory. They will now be fully focused on the Champions League and their first leg performance confirmed them as real contenders to win the competition. Carlo Ancelotti has had a lot of success in the European Cup and he could become the first manager to win the trophy with three different clubs.

Recent form

The Gunners have had a difficult few weeks and will be hoping to show improvement in their performance at the very least. They have lost four of their last six matches, which has seen their aspirations drop massively. Their main aim now is to finish in the top four and win the FA Cup. Although that is a good achievement for most clubs, Arsenal fans demand more and they aren’t seeing the progression that they want from their club.

Bayern Munich have scored 15 goals in four league matches since they beat Arsenal three weeks ago. This is a huge concern for the Gunners, as their defence isn’t looking as formidable as it was towards the end of 2016. The German giants haven’t lost since the end of November and have only failed to win on two occasions during this period.

Predicted line-ups

Wenger sprang a selection surprise at the weekend as he dropped Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean could return to start against Bayern Munich as they can’t afford to not have him on the pitch if the miracle is to happen. Theo Walcott is another player that could start on Tuesday as he has a knack for scoring goals in big matches.

Joshua Kimmich could be the player to replace Philipp Lahm at right back, as he has experience in the position. Xabi Alonso, Franck Ribery, and Arjen Robben were all benched at the weekend but could be in line to start at the Emirates Stadium.

Mesut Ozil is unlikely to feature as he continues to suffer from illness. Mohamed Elneny is out with an ankle injury and is unlikely to play again until next month. Santi Cazorla remains on the treatment table.

Renato Sanches and Douglas Costa are both doubts for the second leg and are unlikely to be risked considering the situation of the tie. Philipp Lahm will miss the trip to the Emirates Stadium as he serves his one-match suspension for accumulated yellow cards.

It will take a miracle for Arsenal to qualify from this tie and few will be predicting it to happen. They have a history of losing the tie during the first leg, before pulling out a win in the second leg, albeit one that isn’t good enough to get them into the next round. That said, they are a mess at the moment and Bayern Munich should win on Tuesday, but it won’t be as convincing as it was at the Allianz Arena.

Score prediction: Arsenal 0-2 Bayern Munich
