Mesut Ozil is now in the final year of his contract at Arsenal and doubts remain about his long-term future. The German international had a disappointing season last year and he will be keen to perform a lot better when the action gets underway next month. He has said that he wants to stay with the Gunners and that he will discuss his future with the club after the pre-season tour. BBC Sport report the following quotes from the German:
“It is definitely my preference to stay. Once everyone is back in London, we will sit down and discuss the future. I have always said that I feel very good at Arsenal.”
This is encouraging news and this summer is looking better for the club with every passing day. They have already made two good signings and it now looks like one of their key players is willing to stay at the club, despite the Gunners not being in the Champions League. Admittedly, he didn’t play as well as supporters expected last season, but he can be world class on his day and he will want to show that more consistently next campaign.
Arsene Wenger is growing more confident when it comes to the club’s chase of Monaco midfielder Thomas Lemar. The Mirror report that the Gunners are ready to offer the Frenchman a five-year deal worth £100,000-a-week and may be prepared to submit a bid upwards of £45 million. Although the Ligue 1 champions want to keep him at the club, the player is understood to be keen on a move and Arsenal must be getting encouragement that a deal can be done.
It has become evident that Lemar is the priority for the club at the moment and they were similarly persistent with Alexandre Lacazette. Wenger scouts Ligue 1 heavily as he understands there is a lot of talent in the league. The Monaco midfielder has shown that he can compete at the highest level after some impressive performances in the Champions League. Many worried that the Gunners would struggle to attract key targets, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. If this one goes through, they will be looking extremely strong heading into the new season.
Olivier Giroud is a player facing an uncertain future at the Emirates Stadium after the arrival of compatriot Lacazette. The Mirror report that he is considering quitting the club and there is a lot of interest in him. Everton, West Ham, Marseille and AC Milan are all monitoring the Frenchman, who understands that he needs to play regularly in order to consolidate his place in the national team ahead of the World Cup. The article included the following quotes from the striker:
“It’s been five years that I’ve been here. It could be my sixth one. I had an amazing welcome from the fans and from the club and it has been five amazing years for me.
“I won’t forget it, no matter what happens. We will see about my future but I am still an Arsenal player for the moment.”
These quotes do suggest that he is seriously considering his future with these quotes. Giroud needs to be playing regularly next season and at the moment, it looks unlikely that he will feature prominently for the Gunners. If he does leave, it is important that he chooses the right club to move to. The coming weeks will tell us a lot more about where the Frenchman will be playing his football this season.
