Arsenal round-up: Chelsea bid for Oxlade-Chamberlain; Sanchez ruled out of opener; Roma pull out of Mahrez race

Written by

The Mail report that Chelsea have launched a £25 million bid for Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. His future at the Emirates Stadium is uncertain as he has less than 12 months left on his current contract. The Blues have stepped up their interest and are ready to make a major play for him before the end of the transfer window. Although Arsene Wenger is keen to extend the 23-year-old’s contract, the power now rests with the player and that is problematic for the Gunners.

This would be a major blow for Arsenal, as they view Oxlade-Chamberlain as an important player after his development over the last 12 months. At the age of 23, he has the potential to push on and become a leading Premier League player during the coming seasons. Given their stance on Alexis Sanchez, it would be a huge risk to make a similar one with Oxlade-Chamberlain. They can’t afford to lose two key players on a free transfer next summer. Therefore, they could be forced to sell the England international to Chelsea.

Alexis Sanchez’s future has been widely discussed this summer, but the season is now upon us and he remains an Arsenal player. Arsene Wenger has confirmed to Sky Sports that the Chilean will miss the opening match of the season against Leicester City, due to an abdominal strain that was suffered in training.

“Sanchez will not be available. He had a little abdominal strain that he caught in training on Sunday morning before he came to Wembley.

“He had a scan two days ago and he’s out for a while. I don’t know [how long he will be out] – two weeks, one more week. He will not be available.”

There will be a lot of scepticism about these quotes, as it has been clear Sanchez wants to leave the club and it is convenient that he has picked up a minor injury days before the new season. Despite Arsenal’s strong stance that he will stay at the Emirates Stadium, there is still a good chance that he leaves this summer. The fact that he will be missing for the first few matches shows that his future remains uncertain.

Riyad Mahrez has regularly been talked about as a target for Arsenal this summer, but Roma have been the frontrunners for his signature. However, The Sun report that Leicester City won’t be willing to sell to the Italian club unless they meet their valuation. They have had two bids turned down for the Algerian international, but they haven’t come close to meeting the £50 million valuation and are going to move on to other targets. This leaves the door open to Arsenal, if they choose to make a move.

Arsenal have chosen not to make a move for Mahrez this summer, but he could emerge as a target during the coming weeks. They have had no luck in their pursuit of Thomas Lemar and it is reaching a point where they need to move for other targets. The Leicester winger has proven himself in the Premier League and he would be a good addition for the Gunners. It is clear he no longer wants to be at Leicester, therefore there is an opportunity for the fee to be negotiated down.
