Are Manchester United right to demand Real Madrid’s Toni Kroos in return for their key man?

Written by

Real Madrid’s interest in Manchester United keeper David de Gea has been well known for a very long time. They had made a move for the 26-year-old in previous windows, only to either be completely shut down by United or the transfer, in 2015, falling through due to paperwork not being completed, as reported by The Guardian.

Through all of this, De Gea has remained with the Red Devils and he has been a stellar performer for them in the past few seasons, growing into arguably the Premier League’s best goalkeeper. Game after game, he has saved them points and there is no wonder why the Old Trafford outfit were, and still are, in no rush to let go of their main man.

However, according to the Mirror, Madrid seemed to have once again reignited their interest in the player just weeks after publicly stating they are not interested in the Spaniard.

The Manchester club have retaliated this time, suggesting that any deal for the goalkeeper will need to see one of Madrid’s stars come the other way.

Jose Mourinho seems to have his eye on German World Cup winner Toni Kroos. The Portuguese manager is a big fan of the 27-year-old and he believes that Kroos would provide be the perfect partner for record-signing Paul Pogba in midfield.

Yet, just as United are in no rush to get rid of David de Gea, Los Blancos hold the same stance with Kroos. The ex-Bayern man has been a crucial element in Madrid’s successes in recent seasons and is in the bracket of elite midfielders in world football.

However, according to the Mirror’s report, United insiders believe that De Gea’s return to Madrid is inevitable. If Kroos was to come the other way, though, it would ease the pain of the loss.

The German would be an upgrade on United’s current options and his playing style would provide a calmness in the Red Devils’ midfield. With Michael Carrick ageing, Kroos looks to be one of the very few natural successors to the Englishman.

Also, United have a ready-made replacement in Sergio Romero. Although the Argentinian isn’t quite as outstanding as De Gea, he is still a strong option and, if they were to lose their key man, he would do a sound job.

Therefore, with backup and potentially an upgrade joining them, plus finance, United would certainly benefit from demanding Kroos as part of the De Gea deal, if they were to sell.
